How to Know if Your Child Really Understands Fractions

Ask one question: “Which is bigger - 1/3 or 1/5?” If they say 1/5 because 5 is bigger than 3, they’ve memorised steps but don’t actually understand what fractions are. Real fraction understanding means knowing that a fraction is a part of a whole, that the bottom number tells you how many equal pieces, and that more pieces means each piece is smaller.

The “why” test

After your child solves any fraction problem, ask: “Why did you do that step?”

If they say “because that’s the rule” or “because teacher said so,” it’s procedural. If they can explain - even messily - that they needed the same denominator so the pieces are the same size, the understanding is real.
